What is it about Christmas trees that we love so much? Is it what they represent? What they hold? The lights we adorn them with? The presents we wrap and place under them?
For me, it's a reminder of the season I think, a reminder that cold weather is upon us, that family will start gathering, that fires will start burning. Growing up, we always had family together for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. I was blessed to have parents and step-parents, so I was double-blessed with grandparents who loved me and step grandparents who did as well. Four set of grands basically. And houses full of cousins! When I see my tree up, it reminds me of those days where we were filled to capacity in houses, the children (me and my sis too) opening gifts, and the feeling of being together. I don't know that I remember a single gift, but I remember those days!
I have always waited until after Thanksgiving to put up my Christmas tree. That is, until last year when we were out of town during Thanksgiving, and I decorated early. I didn't expect to enjoy the decor that early in the season, but I did so much that I repeated the same timeframe this year. It has been nice to have completed.
I have LOTS of trees I can put up and decorate, yet I am currently using just one slender tree. My house is small, so it doesn't allow for too many extras. Two of my trees have a "theme", if and when they are used: A travel tree where I collect ornaments from places I have traveled, and an old world tree, filled with handsewn items from my grandmothers and great grandmothers.
Whether you decorate out of obligation or conviction, each person has their own sense of taste and style. Just like with clothing and accessories. Some people accessorize with large, chunky pieces and some wear heirlooms passed down from generation to generation. Regardless, that person's taste always shines through!
