The holidays are such a joyous time of the year. They are filled with laughter, memories, family gatherings, and holiday cheer. We spend nights by the glow of the Christmas tree, in the solitude of the melodious sounds of Christmas music we have asked Alexa to play for us, while being mesmerized by the flames of the lit woodwick crackling candle. If it's cold enough where we live, we can sit by the fire, sipping hot cocoa while our children read books by the firelight.
Sounds like a fairytale, doesn't it? That's because it is!
No one I know has a holiday season like that! It's hustle and bustle, fighting crowds for more gifts that may go unused, angrily staring out the window as Amazon passes our house once again. We get upset at the USPS carrier when our packages are still "In Transit" day after day. We schedule family events with family we only see once a year and then arrive late because we are still wrapping gifts in route to the party. How old is Cage again? Dangit. He's into skate boarding now? I thought he was still in Mario. Now what do I do about the plushie I got him? And who is the guy with Charity? No one told me he was going to be here and I didn't bring a present for him!
That's living the curvy life. The craziness, the chaos, the confusion over who gets the kids Christmas day in a divided family. It's the time we do not take to slow down and simply enjoy the season.
Thankfully, we are advancing as a society. We can order items at 2am and have Amazon deliver the following day. Our groceries can be brought to our cars for us without ever stepping into a store, or delivered to our homes for a nominal fee. We can Uber to and from parties, watch our dogs on video when we are out of the house, and celebrate with families via a Zoom call.
We are better organized.
